- Nagarahole national park was previously known as Rajiv Gandhi national park. But later, it is named after the lake Nagarahole which, Nagara means Serpent and Hole, River.

Forest departments are in the mood to launch new safari buffer zones in Nagarhole national park. The buffer zones are only used for gardening purposes—the adjacent areas rather than the core zone, i.e., of 643 sq. Kms are the primary buffer zones that the State government declared.
The buffer zones include the 24.74 sq km in Periyapatna taluk, then 109.09 sq km in Hunsur taluk, and also 228.01 sq km in H D Kote, which covers a total area of 361.84 sq km in Mysore. While in Kodagu, It is 200.57 sq. km.
Mahesh Kumar, the Nagarahole Tiger Reserve deputy conservator of forests, said if permission from PCCI is confirmed, then Nagarahole will become the first national park in the South to have a safari buffer zone.
